‘It seems like sorcery’: is light therapy truly capable of improving your skin, whitening your teeth, and strengthening your joints?

Phototherapy is definitely experiencing a surge in popularity. You can now buy illuminated devices designed to address complexion problems and aging signs along with sore muscles and oral inflammation, recently introduced is a dental hygiene device enhanced with miniature red light sources, described by its makers as “a major advance in at-home oral care.” Internationally, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. There are even infrared saunas available, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, the infrared radiation heats your body itself. As claimed by enthusiasts, the experience resembles using an LED facial mask, boosting skin collagen, soothing sore muscles, alleviating inflammatory responses and chronic health conditions while protecting against dementia.

The Science and Skepticism

“It feels almost magical,” notes a neuroscience expert, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Naturally, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, additionally, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Artificial sun lamps frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to combat seasonal emotional slumps. Clearly, light energy is essential for optimal functioning.

Types of Light Therapy

Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. In rigorous scientific studies, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, determining the precise frequency is essential. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, spanning from low-energy radio waves to short-wavelength gamma rays. Phototherapy, or light therapy uses wavelengths around the middle of this spectrum, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, then visible light (all the colours we see in a rainbow) and infrared light visible through night vision technology.

UV light has been used by medical dermatologists for many years to treat chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and vitiligo. It works on the immune system within cells, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” explains a dermatology expert. “There’s lots of evidence for phototherapy.” UVA goes deeper into the skin than UVB, while the LEDs in consumer devices (usually producing colored light emissions) “typically have shallower penetration.”

Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance

Potential UVB consequences, like erythema or pigmentation, are recognized but medical equipment uses controlled narrow-band delivery – meaning smaller wavelengths – which decreases danger. “It’s supervised by a healthcare professional, meaning intensity is regulated,” says Ho. Most importantly, the devices are tuned by qualified personnel, “to ensure that the wavelength that’s being delivered is fit for purpose – different from beauty salons, where oversight might be limited, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.”

Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps

Red and blue light sources, he says, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, though they might benefit some issues.” Red LEDs, it is proposed, help boost blood circulation, oxygen uptake and dermal rejuvenation, and activate collagen formation – a key aspiration in anti-ageing effects. “Research exists,” says Ho. “However, it’s limited.” Regardless, amid the sea of devices now available, “it’s unclear if device outputs match study parameters. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, ideal distance from skin surface, the risk-benefit ratio. There are lots of questions.”

Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions

Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, a microbe associated with acne. The evidence for its efficacy isn’t strong enough for it to be routinely prescribed by doctors – despite the fact that, notes the dermatologist, “it’s commonly used in cosmetic clinics.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he says, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we advise cautious experimentation and safety verification. If it’s not medically certified, oversight remains ambiguous.”

Cutting-Edge Studies and Biological Processes

Meanwhile, in advanced research areas, scientists have been studying cerebral tissue, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Pretty much everything I did with the light at that particular wavelength was positive and protective,” he reports. The numerous reported benefits have generated doubt regarding phototherapy – that it’s too good to be true. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective.

The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, but over 20 years ago, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he says. “I was quite suspicious. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, which most thought had no biological effect.”

The advantage it possessed, however, was its efficient water penetration, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.

Mitochondrial Impact and Cognitive Support

Additional research indicated infrared affected cellular mitochondria. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, generating energy for them to function. “All human cells contain mitochondria, even within brain tissue,” explains the neuroscientist, who concentrated on cerebral applications. “Studies demonstrate enhanced cerebral circulation with light treatment, which is always very good.”

With specific frequency application, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. At controlled levels these compounds, notes the scientist, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, look after your cells and also deal with the unwanted proteins.”

All of these mechanisms appear promising for treating a brain disease: free radical neutralization, anti-inflammatory, and waste removal – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.
