King Charles Officially Removes Prince Andrew of Royal Highness Title and Prince Title

Through a decisive action, the reigning monarch has officially stripped Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his HRH style and his princely title.

The changes were made official by publishing letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm, that have been published in the UK's official public record.

The entry stated: “His Majesty has been pleased by letters patent under the Great Seal dated 3 November 2025 to declare that the individual in question shall no longer be entitled to possess the designation of ‘Royal Highness’ and the honorific status of ‘Prince of the realm’.”

A separate record affirmed the stripping of the dukedom from the peerage list, with immediate effect.

The notice stated: “The king has been pleased by royal warrant under his royal sign manual dated 30 October 2025 to direct his government minister to cause the Duke of York to be removed from the roll of the peerage.”

Background of the Decision

The decision comes after mounting controversy over the former prince's connections to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, including the release of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre.

Giuffre claimed that she was assaulted by Andrew after being brought by Jeffrey Epstein, claims that Andrew has always strenuously denied.

Procedure of Title Removal

Charles employed his monarchical powers—recognized authorities held by the sovereign—following consultation with government advisers, instead of through legislative action.

Letters patent and warrants are instruments of this prerogative, used to bestow or remove titles and honors.

Because the HRH style is granted by letters patent, it can be withdrawn through the same instrument.

Additional Actions and Support

Following the initial announcement, the lord chancellor was directed to draft the required paperwork for the title removals.

The decision also includes Andrew relinquishing his lease on Royal Lodge, a 30-room royal property where he has resided for two decades.

Officials endorsed the king's move.

Retained Honor

In spite of the stripping of honors, it was confirmed that Andrew will retain his South Atlantic medal, granted for his service as a Sea King helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands War.
